Neck Lift or Neck Liposuction

Enhance Your Beauty with a Refined, Graceful Neckline

Aging in the neck area can negatively affect your appearance in several ways. The most noticeable problem is the loss of youthful angularity in your jaw and lower face, as bone structure gets hidden underneath excess skin and sagging tissue. People affected by this condition should consider a neck lift.

Several procedures have been designed for these purposes, including:

  • Neck lift
  • Neck liposuction

Neck lift surgery and liposuction may be combined. Like all procedures performed at our Fairfax plastic surgery center, neck rejuvenation is tailored to meet your individual needs and goals.

How Dr. Hess Performs Neck Lift Surgery

The surgical technique involved will vary with each patient. With older patients, the technique is usually similar to a facelift. The incision starts at the front of the earlobe and extends around the back of the ear and into the hairline. A small incision below the chin is used to remove fat, reshape muscle tissues and possibly remove some of the digastric muscle (a pair of muscles that run below the jaw). In younger patients, it may be appropriate to perform the submental (below the chin) incision alone, with or without neck liposuction.

Neck Lift or Neck Liposuction: Choosing the Right Procedure

During a consultation, Dr. Hess will evaluate your skin firmness and neck area to determine the ideal procedure. Younger patients typically have better skin tone and elasticity. If a young patient has excess fat and tissue below the chin, it can often be corrected with liposuction because the skin will shrink sufficiently after the procedure.

Older patients have different needs. Excess skin, sagging skin, loss of tissue volume, or sagging neck muscles are common problems that liposuction alone cannot address. Patients who exhibit these conditions will benefit from the neck lift.

After Neck Rejuvenation: What to Expect

Although you may feel completely normal in several days, 2 weeks of recovery time should be expected with a neck lift. Many patients plan to wear clothing that covers the neck during their recovery. Dr. Hess will give you specific post-operative instructions, which may include steps to keep your head elevated, wear a special compression garment, and use medications to control discomfort.
