In the meantime, we invite you to view the following pages for more information about the skin conditions we treat at Hess Medical Spa in Fairfax and our advanced non-surgical treatment options.

What’s My Skin Type?

Skin types are divided based on the Fitzpatrick classification. This scale was developed as a way to classify the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet radiation. Although skin colors can be found completely through this spectrum they can be grouped into different types.

Adult Acne

Acne is a skin condition that typically occurs in the teenage years, but adults can have acne as well. Pores in the skin are openings for small glands that secrete oil, which lubricates the skin. When too much oil is produced, the pore can become blocked. Dirt, debris, bacteria, and inflammatory cells build up behind this blockage and may appear as a whitehead or blackhead.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is the result of excess production of melanin, the pigment in the body that provides color. This condition can cause your skin to look uneven, and it is often difficult to conceal with make-up. There are many ways to treat hyperpigmentation, and we offer several of these options at our med spa.

Rosacea

Rosacea is classified as a swelling of the blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin. Due to the higher than normal concentration of blood at the site, the skin can appear to take on a more pink or reddish hue. It can also be associated with small red bumps, spider veins, pimples, eye irritation, and burning, tingling or stinging sensations.

Wrinkles

While there are many factors that can cause aging in your face, the most common reason for wrinkles in the skin is sun damage. Wrinkles and lines in the skin can add to your apparent age and may even make you appear tired or unhealthy. Wrinkles and other signs of aging are classified according to the Glogau scale. This scale was created in order to objectively measure the severity of photoaging, in particular wrinkles.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, also called chemexfoliation or derma peeling, are acids (mostly) that penetrate the skin to different depths, creating a wound. The cells are injured and can no longer stick to each other, thus the skin peels. This wound stimulates the growth of new skin cells and collagen, leading to new, healthier skin.

Vi Peel

The Vi Peel® is a chemical peel that is effective for treatment of unwanted pigment changes caused by acne scarring and photodamage. We often recommend this peel for patients with age spots, freckles, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can tighten your pores, improve skin texture, and smooth out uneven complexions.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a process of mechanically exfoliating the skin. In the medical setting, this is performed via a device that consists of a diamond tip on a wand attached to a vacuum. The tip is passed over the skin and the vacuum removes the exfoliated skin.

Latisse

Latisse is applied to the base of the lashes on the upper eyelid. By keeping hairs in their growth phase, Latisse produces darker, thicker, and longer eyelashes. The effects of Latisse appear after a few weeks but they are not permanent. Patients must continue using it or the eyelashes gradually return to their original state.
