She said she felt the need to seize the opportunity and said the positive change in her body improved her attitude. “I feel good, so I can be a better mom to my kids,” Van Gray said.

What exactly is a mommy makeover?

A “mommy makeover” is simply a popular term that caught on among cosmetic plastic surgeons who perform procedures that help a woman regain her pre-pregnancy body shape. Each mom’s experience will vary depending on her needs, but your plastic surgeon might recommend:

• Breast augmentation, to restore breast fullness/volume
• Breast lift, to elevate the breast position
• Tummy tuck, to flatten the abdomen and remove loose tissue
• Liposuction to slim down areas of stubborn fat

The ASPS recommends that new mothers wait six months to a year before undergoing any of these procedures and that they lose weight before surgery.

According to Dr. Phillip Haeck, ASPS President, women who are electing these procedures are often younger mothers like Mrs. Van Gray. He suggests that this may be a result of shifting attitudes toward cosmetic surgery and a realization about the limits of diet and exercise may fail to achieve.
