Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery involves the surgical removal of loose or sagging skin, fatty deposits, and fine lines surrounding the eyes.

Factors of age, stress level, and heredity can all contribute to the way your eyes look as you age. For some, this means an excessively puffy appearance, deep bags, or dark circles that won't go away. When your eyes begin to look bad, it can convey unintended expressions, such as tired or sad, when you're not. Others will consciously or subconsciously make judgments about you based on your facial expressions.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, eyelid surgery was one the top five most popular procedures in the country in 2007. Eyelid surgery is uniquely able to eliminate saggy and tired eyes with tolerable downtime and provides noticeable, yet natural results. Scars are minimal and practically invisible, because the incision is concealed within the tiny crease of the eyelid.

How are incisions made during the eyelid surgery procedure?

Eyelid surgery may be composed of several procedures depending on the individual and the cosmetic surgery goals. Usually, the procedure consists of a tiny incision in the crease of the upper eyelid or along the rim of the lower eyelid to remove small amounts of tissue or fat.

How long does it take to recover from eyelid surgery?

The recovery time for eyelid surgery can vary greatly by person. Because the area around the eyes can be a sensitive location, patients react very differently to the same procedures.

For most people, the eyelids will feel tight and may be swollen during the first 48 hours following surgery. Keeping your head elevated is generally recommended along with cold packs. Dr. Hess will prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort.

In some cases, vision may be blurry for a few days or longer, and eyes may be sensitive to light. You might be advised to wear sunglasses for a few weeks. After 1-3 weeks, you should be fully recovered and able to appreciate your new, refreshed eyes.
