20/20 Documents the Dangers of DIY Injectables

Dr. Alan Gold describes it best as “the blind leading the blind” in this piece about discount_medspado-it-yourself cosmetic procedures.  Apparently, a woman in Texas was posting instructional videos on how to self-inject substances purchased from her company website, Discount Medspa.

Chemical peels, botulinum toxin and cosmetic wrinkle fillers were all available without a prescription or a visit to a physician.

The business was illegal, and for good reason.  20/20 documents some of the negative, downright scary experiences of a few women who purchased cosmetic products from the site and tried to use them.

It seems like an obvious violation of common sense to attempt these things, but stories like this continue to surface in the news.  If you do any reading on RealSelf.com or on the websites of plastic surgeons, you’ll constantly be told to “see a board-certified plastic surgeon” for your treatment.  It may seem redundant, but it appears that people still need to be reminded.
