Risks with Body Contouring Surgery and Increased Body Mass Index

A recent study published by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery notes that patients with a high Body Mass Index, (BMI), greater than 41 have an extreme elevated risk of secondary complications when undergoing body contouring surgeries like abdomionoplasty, liposuction, thigh lifts, buttock and upper arm lifts.  These statistics were significant as those patients had a 46.9% risk of developing major secondary complications post operatively.

The demand for body contouring procedures has increased significantly over the past several years as many people find it more and more difficult to identify with their normal size and shape.  However, there is no quick fix for finding the ideal size.  It is important for people who are seeking surgical alternatives to dieting to first consider the risk and complications that can arise.

If you live in Fairfax or Northern Virginia and you have questions about body contouring surgery, Dr. Christopher Hess can help you make an informed decision on the realities and limitations of these surgical procedures and whether they would be appropriate for you.  Dr. Hess is board certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
